CHAPTER TWENTY
TREY
For the first time, the enormity of what Trey had signed up for hit him. He had placed second to Congressman Bell in the Primaries, lagging behind by only 10 delegate votes, and he was moving on to the general election. Jess’s friend Cora said that it was pretty good, especially considering Trey was a newbie.
He was sitting on his porch swing with Annie at his feet after morning chores watching the sun come up when Jess pulled up in her little car.
“You look stunned,” she said.
“I feel like a bull just head butted me.”
“Ouch.” She grinned and walked up to him, opening her arms wide. “Congratulations!”
He decided he liked this hugging thing. Even if it was in the name of friendship. She fit just right in his arms. He could hold her forever.
She pulled away and tucked her hair behind an ear, turning pink.
He sat on the porch swing and she joined him.
“Are you excited, or what?” she asked.
“Kind of. But part of me wants to groan.” He did groan into his hands. “What have I done?”
He felt her touch on his arm and turned beseeching eyes to her.
She smiled, her expression tender. “The good news is, you aren’t the winner yet. You will have a few months to get used to the idea. The bad news is…let me get back with you on the bad news.”
“That’s okay. I can live without knowing the bad news. For now. For today. How’s that for procrastination?”
She had kept her hand on his arm this whole time, and it felt…right. Like it belonged there. He imagined sitting at this porch swing for the next several years’ worth of evenings as a married couple growing old together.
Suddenly, he raged against the strangeness of their situation. They were both unattached singles who dodged love at every turn. He could declare himself to her right here, right now. Who cared if she rejected him? At least she would know that the affection he felt went deeper than what she remembered from high school.
Whatever she said next would help him decide.
By his feet, Annie suddenly raised her head and let out a howl worthy of a redbone. Then she bounded off the deck and practically skidded into the bushes.
Distracted, Trey watched his dog’s antics and waited for her to come back. No matter. He was going to declare himself. Until he caught the telltale bombastic smell of…
Skunk.
His coon hound came out of the bushes with her head and tail down, eyes closed and whining.
Trey muttered, “That blasted hound…”
Forget the love talk.
Jess was laughing too much anyway to pay attention to him.
